Navigating Uncertain Waters: Sivan to Tammuz

By aligning ourselves with the rhythms of the lunar cycle, we can navigate life's challenges with greater wisdom and resilience.

A New Chapter Begins

The past month, Sivan, was a season of growth and connection. I'm thrilled to share that I've accepted a new position as Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. This unexpected opportunity aligns perfectly with my dream of building communities of learners centered around the Jewish calendar. While this transition is exciting, it's also a time of significant change and uncertainty.

  • How have you experienced growth and connection in the past month of Sivan?

  • What changes are happening in your life right now?

Embracing the Calm After the Storm

As we move into the month of Tammuz, the energy shifts from the vibrant energy of Sivan to a quieter, more reflective period. It's like the calm after a storm, a time for contemplation and introspection. Just as Moses descended from Mount Sinai, we too may feel a sense of letdown after the excitement of recent events.

Tammuz invites us to delve deep within ourselves, to examine the root causes of our imbalances and cultivate courage through uncertainty. It's a time to shed the layers of protection we've built around ourselves and embrace our vulnerabilities. The tears we shed during this time can be healing waters that lead to growth.

Finding Strength in Fear & Uncertainty

Tammuz is a month known for its challenges. It's a time of doubt, wavering, and potential imbalance. Yet, within these difficulties lie opportunities for immense growth and strength. Just as a tree's roots grow deeper in challenging soil, we too can develop resilience through adversity.

The period leading up to Tisha B'Av is a time for reflection on the mistakes of our ancestors and the importance of emotional control. It's a reminder to stay grounded and avoid impulsive decisions.

The Power of Connection

Tammuz is also associated with the lunar phases and can bring fluctuations in mood. To counter this, we're encouraged to share our feelings and support others. By reaching out to those in need, we gain perspective and balance.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Who in your life seems to be struggling right now? How can you support them during this challenging time?

  • When you’re overwhelmed, where do you typically turn for solace or support? What actions, routines, and people help you regain your balance?

  • Embracing life’s imperfections leads to greater peace and fulfillment. What steps can you take today to release control and celebrate the unknown?
